The plot synopsis begins In 1999... Later, it says ...several hundred years prior, in the 21st century... This is a flat-out contradiction, and utterly confusing to readers (like me) who haven't seen the film. Darkwarriorblake, in his edit summary, says "it's explained in hte 2nd sentence after this one". I can only assume that he means the sentence The Matrix is a simulated reality based on human civilization at its peak, but that doesn't make clear that it wasn't 1999 in the beginning of the film (and who says that human civilization was at its peak in 1999, anyway?). 1999 was in its proper place before this edit, and it should go back there. Pinging Esowteric, who also reverted my "clarify" tag. 217.183.55.248 (talk) 16:26, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Neo has been led to believe that he is living around 1999, but that's just the matrix, the simulation. In the "real world", it's much, much later in time than that. Hence the reference to "several hundred years prior", though Morpheus admits they don't know when, exactly. At least, that's what I think. Sorry, I rushed earlier, without reading that you were referring to the plot. From the transcript: Morpheus: You believe it’s the year 1999 when in fact it’s closer to 2199. I can’t tell you exactly what year it is because we honestly don’t know. There’s nothing I can say that will explain it for you, Neo.Esowteric + Talk + BreadcrumbsEsowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs16:31, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
